Unreal tournament CTF

For this project I made a Capture the Flag map for Unreal Tournament. From finding inspiration outside, researching , brainstorming and sketching ideas to blocking out the level and then playtesting and iterating upon the blockout. See the process below.

Work process

1. Research

For this project we had to find inspiration from architecture and nature outside of our homes for our unreal tournament maps.

I made tons of photo’s for inspiration and picked out a few that I wanted to use for the level flow and structures after brainstorming a few ideas.

Ofcourse these decisions were made after researching existing Unreal Tournament maps and the available pickups and build in features.

2.  Brainstorm and sketching

As an excersize for this project, we were required to use the photo’s we made as concepts for our maps.

With some mixing and matching and trying out various drawovers on different pictures I had some ideas on what elements I wanted in my map.

Here I had the idea of making a longer map that is more open, ideal for sniping.

After the drawovers, I sketched out a few ideas on what I wanted elements of my map to look like.

3. Node- and top down map

These are the first node and top down maps I made, on which I based my first blockout.

The map had quite a lot of open space , with the middle braking everything up.

4. Blockout

This is the first blockout of my map

5. Iteration and playtesting

Based on feedback while playtesting and iterating upon the playability, the map changed quite a lot in the end.

The side sections were removed, there are more paths for the player to move and it is not as open as beforehand.

Velox

Velox was the first project I ever worked on with a team in Unreal Engine. It’s a 2d platformer where each student made their own level.

This project was made by 3 designers and the level you see above was made by myself.
